What this document is
A COSHH assessment records the risks from a particular hazardous substance and the measures used to control exposure. It should reflect the product, task and working conditions in your own garage.
When a garage might use it
A garage may need one when it uses or stores substances that can harm health, including brake cleaner, degreasers, solvents, paints, adhesives and some oils. Review it when products, tasks or controls change.
Who normally completes or reviews it
Usually a competent manager, supervisor or appointed person who understands the task and has access to the product safety data sheet. Staff using the substance should be aware of the controls.
Evidence and records to retain
Retain the assessment, current safety data sheet, staff briefing or training records, equipment checks and any review notes.
Information it should contain
- • Product name, supplier and current safety data sheet reference
- • Hazards, routes of exposure and people who may be affected
- • How the substance is stored, used and controlled
- • Required PPE, ventilation, training and emergency action
- • Assessment date, reviewer and next review date
Common mistakes
- • Using one generic assessment for unrelated products
- • Not keeping the current safety data sheet with the assessment
- • Failing to review controls after a new product or process is introduced

Do I need a COSHH assessment for every product?
A separate assessment is normally needed where the products, hazards, exposure or controls differ. A competent person can help decide a proportionate approach.
Is a safety data sheet the same as a COSHH assessment?
No. The safety data sheet provides product information; the assessment records how that product is used and controlled in your garage.
