Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Workshop Safety: UK Garage Guide

1. Why electric and hybrid vehicles change workshop risk
Electric and hybrid vehicles can contain high-voltage systems capable of causing serious injury or death. Stored electrical energy may remain even when the ignition is off, and damaged batteries can create additional fire, chemical and thermal risks. Movement of the drive wheels may also generate dangerous voltage.
The controls needed depend on the vehicle, its condition and the task. A routine service that does not involve the high-voltage system is different from diagnosis on an energised system, battery removal or work on a collision-damaged vehicle.
2. Decide the work category before accepting the job
Define what the workshop will and will not do, then match people, information and controls to that scope. HSE separates work that does not involve high-voltage systems from work on isolated high-voltage systems and work where systems may remain energised.
- Identify whether the vehicle is electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid and record the specific model
- Confirm the task and whether it could disturb high-voltage cables, components or the battery
- Check for collision, flood, heat, battery or charging damage before moving or working on the vehicle
- Obtain current manufacturer repair and isolation information for the exact vehicle
- Escalate work outside the workshop's agreed capability to a competent specialist
3. Competence, instruction and supervision
People must be competent for the work they carry out. Competence is task-specific: general awareness may be enough for someone who only moves vehicles, while diagnosis or work on a high-voltage system needs greater technical knowledge, practical skill and appropriate supervision.
A qualification can support evidence of competence, but a certificate alone does not replace task-specific training, manufacturer information, experience and an assessment of whether the person can perform the work safely.
- Record each person's authorised work scope, training and any restrictions
- Provide awareness instruction for valeters, recovery staff, apprentices and others who may encounter an EV
- Use competent supervision where a learner or less-experienced technician is involved
- Review competence when vehicle technology, equipment or the workshop's service scope changes
4. Isolation and control of the work area
Follow the vehicle manufacturer's procedure for shutdown, isolation and proving the system safe. Do not assume that switching off the ignition removes every source of electrical energy. Keep remote keys away from the vehicle and control access to them.
The work area should prevent unauthorised access and make the vehicle's status obvious. The exact equipment and personal protective equipment must be selected from the risk assessment, manufacturer procedure and task — a generic list cannot make a high-voltage job safe.
- Use a documented isolation process for the exact vehicle and task
- Secure keys and any service disconnect under the control of the person doing the work
- Mark and segregate the work area with suitable signs or barriers
- Inspect insulated tools, test equipment and protective equipment before use
- Record who isolated the vehicle, when it was isolated and when it was returned to service
5. Damaged, recovered and stored vehicles
A damaged or faulty EV needs an additional assessment before recovery, towing, storage or repair. HSE advises checking high-voltage cables and components, considering whether the battery has been compromised and avoiding towing unless it is known to be safe.
Set an escalation process for heat, smoke, unusual odour, noise, coolant loss, visible battery damage or uncertainty about battery condition. Emergency arrangements should reflect the premises, vehicle type and local fire-and-rescue advice; staff should not improvise around a suspected battery incident.
6. Evidence worth keeping
Useful records demonstrate that the workshop has defined its capability and is applying it consistently. Keep the evidence proportionate to the work actually undertaken.
- EV and hybrid risk assessment covering normal work and damaged vehicles
- Authorised-person list, competence records and refresher dates
- Manufacturer procedures or a recorded route to current repair information
- Isolation, key-control and vehicle-status procedure
- Inspection records for relevant tools, test equipment and protective equipment
- Incident, near-miss and damaged-battery escalation records
- Emergency plan and evidence that staff understand it

Do technicians need a specific licence to work on electric vehicles?
There is not one universal EV-work licence covering every workshop task. Employers must ensure people are competent for the work they do. Recognised training or qualifications can support that evidence, but the required capability depends on whether the person is moving the vehicle, carrying out work away from the high-voltage system, isolating it or working on energised components.
Is an EV safe when the ignition is switched off?
Do not assume so. High-voltage energy can remain stored and some systems can operate unexpectedly. Follow the manufacturer procedure for shutdown, isolation and verification before work.
Can a normal workshop service an EV without touching the high-voltage system?
Often yes, provided the task has been assessed, technicians understand the vehicle-specific precautions and high-voltage components will not be disturbed. HSE gives separate guidance for maintenance that excludes high-voltage electrical work.
What should a garage do with a damaged EV battery?
Stop, segregate the area and follow the vehicle manufacturer's emergency information and the workshop's escalation plan. Battery condition may not be obvious. Seek competent specialist or emergency-service advice where there are signs of damage, heat, smoke, odour, noise or uncertainty.
